I just wondered as there are so many creatives out there selling their work on Etsy or Facebook @Former-Member. I do notice they tend to wear handmade clothing. But yes I used to sew clothes for myself. Not knit so much. But when I was a student just wore clothes I made. I have noticed in the past the prices of fabric really going up which was a reason why I stopped sewing. You could get quality clothes at charitable op shops by comparison but now the op shop stock is all fast fashion. There were places in Melbourne that had pop up shops that would appear without any signage to liquidate end of reel imports. (Melbourne is a known fabric hub) I don't know if you are in Melbourne but "Darn Cheap Fabrics" is another end of reel place I used to go to. They sell nice stuff - its a bit more pricey but you are getting quality fabrics.

@Former-Member fabric is so expensive now!! But this is an awesome tip. I'll have to look that fabric store up.
And yes, I love op-shops for it. But it's so rare that you find enough for a full garment. But patchwork stuff is nice too!

There was also another discount retailer known as "Bargain Box" with stores all over Melbourne. I didn't particularly like the fabrics but for lightweight summer dresses it was good. There are discount places as well as fabric liquidators if you ask around on sewing forums. I don't know how much has changed since I stopped sewing but suburbs like Richmond, Brunswick and Dandenong were full of cut price fabric outlets @Former-Member

@Appleblossom here are some hippy crochet garments from a lady I follow on facebook. You'll get the gist of what I mean after seeing this pic:

Thanks
@Former-Member
The pic is lovely but does not feel hippy like to me.
The trees might, the fact of a poncho might, but the style and use of paisely and swirls is wrong, and the socks or are those tatts! Oh no not convinced ... ha ha.
Maybe I saw too many hippies with mine own eyes, tho I only caught the tail end. I did see old fashioned crochets squares and simpler ponchos around. I also get critical of dress and hair styles in period movies when I was alive. It feels so artificial and gives me a Brechtian alienation effect: ie Its not real.
Went to fete and lil ole laydee told me she was called from Qld cos of panic news reporting about the river. I know the contours of our land and did not add up.

@Former-Member @Former-Member I used to shop at Cleggs and Myer material department. I know what you mean about varying quality in fabrics. I still did a little sewing when Spotlight came out and have a beautiful tapestry curtains in my lounge room, but really slowed down sewing mainly due to eyesight.
The lady I just mentioned is a whizz with fabric, art and jewellery. Very creative. I am more functional, but still it was a good part of my life.
