sorry, I didnt see your post somehow @Emelia8 snap re farm, not ours .. very good garden, and some good fruit trees but fruit was cheap and really really good in those days, I struggle with what is in shops these days just awful.
yes, had hogget once a fortnight for family of 6, til 10 ish we used to eat flap etc that later on cats didnt even like lol
had like 30 chooks, pigs, our own cows, chicken was for special occasions tho lol unless it died of old age jk lol then were 'boilers' so was some sort of stew
never had sardines, went moved into town mid 70s had prob eaten capsicum, garlic like once before, fish was canned salmon and tuna, but used to get fresh fish from the guy who used to pick up cream cans from cows , was funny he would come like once a week and the cream just sat in can for days think, no refrigeration, unthinkable these days ha ha
we never had roosters, used to buy day old chickens they would arrive in cardboard cartons on the bus from the city lol were like 11c each, they would spend first few weeks in section of old rain water tank filled with straw and big infra red heat lamp lowered down to be near them at night.

I didn't grow up in a religious family. Although my mum was a Sunday School teacher religion was always left for us to choose. I'm not religious but my partner of 27 years was so it was and his father was a Fisherman so there was always plenty of fish. After his father died we would make a trip to the fish punts on Good Friday to buy fish. He's been dead 19 years now but I still miss those trips to the fish punts.
I like that there is always a variety of fish available at Easter that isn't necessarily available at other times.
Your story about the lamb reminded me of a job I had in the mid- nineties. The boss had a large property and would give me firewood as payment for overtime. The firewood would have cost much more than the overtime pay if I'd had to buy it.

Good afternoon @maddison @TAB @MDT @Scream58 @Historylover @greenpea @Emelia8 @Former-Member @Shaz51 and everyone here. Just checking in to let you know that I’m doing okay. I’ve had an early arvo rest and have been out to donate to the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal via a collection point with the local fire brigade team. It’s fish and chips planned for dinner tonight with my housemate as a usual ritual- we’re not religious but it’s a tradition we’ve had since living together as housemates for 6 years so we’ve stuck with it. I also grew up with having fish on Good Friday in my family household via my mother’s insistence to follow what she grew up with.
@Emelia8 I hope you’re improving in hospital. Take care of yourself!
I’m now planning on doing some knitting of an adult charity blanket that I’ve been working on for the last month or so.
Enjoy the rest of your day forumites!
