I don't understand how we can hurt and traumatise those we once loved like that. 

I think that lack of understanding of how we could hurt someone who has given their all to another is why I still struggle with ex friend. 

When my ex fiance and I split (he cheated on me while I was in Geraldton with family as my cousin had died in a car accident) I couldn't bring myself to go for half of his trust fund or assets which were substantial. It's not a thing I would do. I laugh now over his reaction to the splitting of joint property - I offered to buy him out and then gave him $20 because he owed me almost as much as what the property was worth. His response was "typical that you all of a sudden remember that I owe you xxx dollars" 

Sorry, I'm running on and making it about me again.

In this case I hope the other party starts realising that squandering money in an effort to give you less will work in your favour.
