Here is my latest crochet attempt @Former-Member @CheerBear @Catcakes @TheVorticon. Er...methinks it is as wonky as I am. All advice warmly welcomed.

Hey @Phoenix_Rising that's not so bad as you might think.
Actually, it's pretty good, especially given you have only just begun!!!!!!
I really mean that I'm not just being kind or BS*ing. It's true.
Sure, the edges are wonky, (hey, I'm really wonky around the edges today), but the body of the work shows you have the basic concepts down. :claps hands:
The tension is indeed inconsistent, not gonna lie, but that's part of the learning process.
Holding each loop as you're working it will help with that, like in SimplyDaisy's videos iirc. The trick is not to pull the loop tighter when it comes off the hook, but to keep it the same size as when it was on the hook. (hopefully that made sense).
Tension is also something that can be adjusted with changing up or down the hook size with the yarn size, so not a problem here, just part of the learning process.
I also wonder if you have the hook in front with the yarn held at the back of the work for each stitch. Like in the videos.
Now, it's pretty much practice and getting down how holding the work as you progress, and how you hold your hook, and tension the thread, works best for you.
I humbly suggest, if you have any, that you use a single coloured yarn to learn with, as it's so much easier to see where you're going and what part needs adjustment.
Keep this piece so you have it to compare things to when you getgud! which won't be as far away as you fancy.
A couple of questions if you don't mind, your answers will help me with knowing how to address any issues you feel you're having. (if you still would like my advice, of course)
What sized hook are you using? it will be on the handle somewhere, it might be a letter, a number or both. (you might need a magnifying glass to see it I usually do)
What yarn is it (if you know, that is) and what sized hook does it recommend on the label (if you haz the label)?
Did the videos help in any way? which ones, which techniques, or ... , if any?
Are there particular parts of the process that you can identify that you feel you're not quite getting the hang of? If you don't mind of course. hehe, you can't say 'all of it' now that I've seen your work, 'cos you're doin' okay there.
OH, I think I see what has happened. I copied and 'embiggened' your image to see better. The good news is that you have made some decorative stitches (whose names escapes me just now) instead of ordinary single crochet!
I think I may be to blame. I said to work through the back loop of each stitch for neatness, I don't think I said to do this ONLY on the foundation row, that is the row you do after doing the beginning chain row. ((sorry, sorry, sorry).
I'll stop now, post this and see where we're at when you get a chance to respond.

@Catcakes You can see where I'm going with my crochet masterpiece? Oh phew, that makes one of us!
@Former-Member oh superly duperly big thank you for your feedback. I think I will print it out and have it beside me when I make my next attempt.
Yep, I am super struggling with the tension thing. Thank you for the tips!
I also wonder if you have the hook in front with the yarn held at the back of the work for each stitch. Like in the videos.
Um, I am pretty sure I'm putting the yarn around the hook the correct way. Is that what you mean? Or do you mean how I'm holding the yarn and hook relative to the bit I've already done? Because I'm pretty sure I don't have much idea about that and I think this might be an issue.
I humbly suggest, if you have any, that you use a single coloured yarn to learn with, as it's so much easier to see where you're going and what part needs adjustment.
I read that somewhere too. I can get some single coloured yarn, but I was actually thinking today how much it helps me to figure out where I'm at having it different colours. If I get another ball of yarn, what ply should I get? This one is 4-ply. I just saw your question about the yarn - I can't remember if it said on the label what size hook to use (and who knew one should keep the label of yarn! ).
What sized hook are you using? it will be on the handle somewhere, it might be a letter, a number or both. (you might need a magnifying glass to see it I usually do)
It's a 4.25mm hook (G/6)

I have watched the first half of the first video. I don't plan to move onto anything more until I've mastered this single crochet stitch.
I think turning at the ends is where I get stuck - hence the wonkyness. I'm also not doing any counting yet - perhaps that contributed to the wonkiness too.
OH, I think I see what has happened. I copied and 'embiggened' your image to see better. The good news is that you have made some decorative stitches (whose names escapes me just now) instead of ordinary single crochet!
Well obviously that was entirely planned.
I think I may be to blame. I said to work through the back loop of each stitch for neatness, I don't think I said to do this ONLY on the foundation row, that is the row you do after doing the beginning chain row. ((sorry, sorry, sorry).
Trust me, you are in no way to blame for my wonky crochet - this is all entirely my own work. Hmmm...yes, I probably did work through the back loop of each stitch. So...what is the alternative? {Phoenix_Rising contemplates whether she has any idea at all as to which is the back and which is the front of a stitch}.
Super big thank you for your guidance @Former-Member. You have made me feel like I might just get up to being able to make a baby dragon sometime before the year 2020!

A really quick response here as I'm going to try some teaching photos instead of video - insurmountable privacy stuffs with videos. sigh
Awesomely set out response @Phoenix_Rising sincerely appreciate your feedback and the detail you've provided with your responses. not but (you = so well communicated)
Just to clarify: all the videos I listed are beginning instruction videos, each teach slightly different ways, or show slightly different techniques for the same thing - initial chain and single crochet into a swatch just like you have there. BUT - there is a lot of visual pollution so I will link the single crochet part of Moogly with seeing how someone else holds the yarn and hook. moogly single crochet only
If you can, watch Simply Daisy all the way through so you can see the full process, then replay as needed if that works for you. Also, watch Moogly single crochet (link up there), if you can, so you can see how someone else does it, different learning and different teaching methods you see.
I wanted to tell you this before I set out on this photography teaching adventure, so you've got time to watch if you want to before I get back here.
I'll come back to answer the rest of your post as soon as I can @Phoenix_Rising
