@CheerBear Oh My! I just fell down a rabbit hole re the micro crochet and discovered those really wee creatures are made with a .4 mm hook and Gutterman sewing thread! Gutterman is a good quality sewing thread - I use it for most of my sewing except when I'm using up stash reels of thread.

That is sooo far out of my league! 

Edited to say: That's a really good tutorial for teaching the crochet chain too. Patience with the foundation is something I still need after more than 50 years of crocheting.

I just thought of a couple of things that can help a great deal, especially with the foundation row. The type of crochet hook you have can make a difference to how easy you find crochet. I have always liked the hooks with more of a pointy sort of end to them as they go through a loop more easily than the fully rounded ones, at least for me they do. 

Also, don't be afraid of holding each chain in the foundation row by itself to get your hook through, if it's looser, it's a bit easier to do. I usually encourage beginners to use bigger single coloured yarn with a bigger hook so it's easier to see what you're doing.

Hello @Former-Member, we haven't "met" yet, but I have seen you around in Forum Land. I have been hiding in my shell for a little while due to some super big brain mushing muddles. Hopefully my brain will get unmushed sometime soon, and then I will be out and about in Forum Land a bit more. It sounds like you have really found your niche hanging out here with CheerBear in the Craft Corner. As you might have gathered, I am VERY new to the crocheting adventure. I noticed that you mentioned in a post that you love helping people learn crafty things and seeing them "get" it. Yeah...you might be waiting a little while longer for me to get it.  CheerBear's pictures are definitely going to help though.

I've read about some of your awesome adventures here in Forum Land too @Phoenix_Rising nice to 'meet' you here.  Sorry about the mushy brain, it happens to most of us at one time or another I think. Craft Corner is a comfortable place for me right now. 

Be patient with yourself with 'getting' the crochet, there's no rush, it's nice to be able to take your time with it.

For me, there's joy seeing someone become familiar with a craft no matter how long it's taken. It took me 25 years to finally master the tatting knot, or at least I began trying to learn 25 years (before Utube etc) before I ended up sitting in front of my computer and trying over and over and over to make that knot happen. Took me a while, then when it hit, it's like, Oh, THAT'S what they meant! 

With crochet, there's lots of things to find the way that is most comfortable for you, holding the yarn, holding the hook, and then where to find that pesky loop to put the hook through (how did it get so small?) , and how on earth am I supposed to get the hook WITH another loop of yarn, back through that pesky loop without hooking up all those pieces!? Yeah, I understand it's not really easy, but it's so good when you make that first line of crochet work! The rest becomes so much more fun.

@Former-Member - I'm so tired that I am wondering if I will make it through writing a quick post here before I crash. I really wanted to say a huge big thank you for sharing what you have and I can't wait to read through it properly and work it out (re threads/hooks etc). I've had lots of smiles here in this little corner today 🙂 How amazing is micro? One day maybe (with heaps and heaps of practice!). I'm seriously keen to try though, once I work out these threads. Sounds like you have so much experience. So awesome 🙂

Wow! I am in total love with that peacock tail rug! Pity my memories of crochet include my mother telling me (and rightly so) that I simply cannot be taught. LOL! I'll admire all your amazing work from afar though!

I'm so sorry your experience is of having been told you are unteachable. @Queenie I hope it's okay to say that I have real trouble believing that any one is unteachable, unless there are compromised physical capabilities or something like that. But that's not that they're unteachable, that's a different thing entirely.

In my experience, it's more often that the teacher has not found a way that works for the student. But I'm a bit biased like that 'cos I have something of a different way of seeing things.

@TheVorticon - is this a new something or an old something and is there any chance it's something I might know (carefully here in case you are wanting to be a bit quiet about it)?! So, so cool!

@Former-Member - I had a little bit of a look around Google today and read about mercerised cotton which is not something I had heard of before. I also Googled how to separate strands of embroidery floss too (which I think it's called - I am very much learning!). My thoughts following the very quick play I had with micro was that I would work my way down in hook size very slowly. I think I need thread that's 3 x thickness of embroidery floss maybe and am wondering if you have any thoughts on that? I tried two and three together but got myself very tangled and it didn't work!

Did you get up to any crafting today? Hope it's been an ok/good day for you 🙂
