Hi @soul, I chose the name "Sahara" because it is a little bit like my real name, but different in a good way. I didn't want a name that had anything to do with mental health or lack thereof... I don't want to constantly self-identify as someone who is unwell.
I also love nature and I love the desert.... I had some good experiences of travelling through the Australian out-back on trips when I was growing up. I have never been to the actual Sahara, though.
Then I just chose an avatar that I thought looked like the desert... but also pretty. I'm thinking of changing it soon.

I could equally put this in this thread or in the username thread, because they're the same thing.
Vorticons are bad guys from the series of Commander Keen games. When I was a kid, the family PC had the 1st episode of Invasion of the Vorticons and I played that game a lot. Vorticons look kind of like humanoid dogs, and in that game they would jump quite high, move quickly, and (to my knowledge at the time) couldn't be stopped with the laser gun. Vorticons would "-1 life" Keen immediately on contact.
I chose it as my username and avatar because when I signed up here I was feeling a lot like an evil bad guy, who might as well have been jumping around guarding the exit of a level.

I don’t see you as being a “bad guy” @TheVorticon - just saying. Hope you’re not feeling that way now. Funny how things from our childhood stick with us.

Hi @soul and everyone,
Sadly, at 38, I still have almost no sense of self. I spend most of my time feeling like a nothing. But two things that have always been important to me are books and animals—for the last seven years, my cat in particular. So after settling on a book-related name, I decided to find a nice anonymous cat for my avatar. I like this cat for a few reasons: it is looking out at the rain (which I also love); it is safe behind a window (something that is important to me—keeping animals safe); and it looks, perhaps, just a little bit sad (I didn’t want a bright, happy picture because that’s not me at all—but I also didn’t want something really sad or depressing).
Thanks for starting this great thread, @soul. 🐱🌷

Thanks for that reply @Former-Member - out pets are wonderful companions. I talk to a bird and dog all day. The dog sleeps on my bed and is never far away from me. That cat in your pic comes across as very pensive and a bit inquisitive. I wonder what it’s looking at.
I don’t read as many books as I used to these days, more so just stuff on the internet but losing myself in a book is something I want to get back to doing.
Have a great weekend.

Hey dear @soul,
My avatar is Kanga the Kangaroo and her little Joey. It shows the sweet protective, nuturing love of a mother for her child.

@soul, it always makes me so happy to hear that people’s pets sleep on the bed. 😊 My cat sleeps on my bed, too.
I’d be totally lost without her. She’s my whole world, my family, my furry little reason for being. 🐱💚
I hope you have a great weekend, too.
