Odd one out in friends
- Hello, I moved from a country nearly 2 years ago. I feel like I’ve mainly recovered from being “homesick” and don’t miss my old country as much, I do indeed feel like I’ve moved on as well. The only problem I have are my friends here. I have these 3 close friends. I feel like I relate to them, and I’m also quite close with one of them due to being in the same classes. But all 3 of them seem to just fit in together way more than me. I’m also not very updated with social media trends, songs, celebrities etc, while they do a lot and I just seem like the odd one out. I’m also very socially awkward with everyone, and can’t seem to get very close with others either. I have my friends from my other country that I’m in contact within- but it’s not if I can go see them every day like the friends I do have at school. I just can’t seem to fit in, I’m always worried if I’ll say something wrong that will offend someone- but then at the same time I want to be casual and be like how they act with their other friends. And so yea, sorry if this didn’t fully make sense, I’m unsure how to explain it. Thank you for listening.

Re: Odd one out in friends
Hi @Astar772 that can be a really difficult place to be in a friendship, feeling like you're just on the outside a little bit. It can be especially hard when it seems like this stuff comes so easily to those around you, but can be hard work for you.
I know it can feel isolating, so I just want you to know you're not alone in feeling like this, many forum members here have had struggles with feeling like they fit in, myself included.
I noticed that you mentioned school a few times and just wanted to check whether you're over 18 and want to make sure you're getting the best support for you 🙂

Re: Odd one out in friends
Hey thanks, I’m a bit under 18 and just wanted to unload what I’ve been feeling, any feedback, and to hear about others stories that are going through similar scenarios. 🙂 It’s comforting but also sad knowing that others struggle to fit in as well, not outside the box- but not inside either- more like on the rim 🤔

Re: Odd one out in friends
Hey @Astar772 ,
It takes a lot to reach out to an online community.
I read that you are a little under 18.
Unfortunately, these forums are for those who are 18 and above.
We do this to ensure that young people can talk with people of specialised skills and connect with peers of their own age. I have listed some supports below that may be of help to you in. In particular ReachOut.com are an online space similar to our forums but for younger people.
Other places you can get help:
- You could talk to your GP or a trusted teacher at school
- ReachOut.com (youth mental health service) — online help
- headspace (ages 12-25) — call 1800 650 890
- Kids Helpline (ages 5-25) — call 1800 55 1800
- Lifeline — call 13 11 14
- Suicide Call Back Service (all ages) — call 1300 659 467
- Head to Health - for advice, assessment and referral into local mental health services – call 1800 595 212 from 8:30am to 5pm on weekdays (public holidays excluded)
