Hi @Daisydreamer and forum friends. Today I'm at a 1. Struggling with my girl in hospital and catatonic again with ECTs commencing next week. Monday I was told she was being sent to a women's psychiatric unit long term and today this news. Feeling so helpless and my heart aches for her. So today I didn't achieve much at all and the kindest thing I can do for myself is simply go to bed.

@Tyrone I'm so sorry for your loss, that is heartbreaking. Such immense grief is so difficult to bear, especially on your own. No running water is just atrocious too, that is a basic human right. I agree with you in that the mental health system is in need of serious overhaul, and I empathise with you in terms of how much these broken systems dictate our lives.

 

I really hear how empathetic and compassionate you are to want to protect others from your anger. To me, anger is one of the most misunderstood and incorrectly stigmatised emotions. Our society condemns it, saying that displays of anger are wrong. But I disagree. Displays of violence and aggression are wrong. Anger is as natural as breathing. And anger is the emotion that tells us when we are experiencing injustice, it shows us what we are passionate about and shows us how we've been wounded. Anger is energy, and motivation for change.

 

I wonder if it might be helpful to shift focus, so that instead of trying to control your emotions, you are instead just looking at how they are expressed? We don't choose how we feel, and we can't stop ourselves from having emotions. Controlling them often translates to suppressing them in my experience - not trying to tell you how you ought to feel or should respond to these feelings, just offering some food for thought.

@Krishna I am so sorry to hear, that news must have been so hard to hold Heart Kindness for yourself and listening to your body when it needs to rest sounds like the best thing you could have done. Do you have support around you while you process the news?

I am new to this space, somehow it helps to hear that so many are in similar situations as myself. My score has gone from 1 to 5 as I read thorough and found I am not alone. However from our families experience over the years the public systm has been exellant sometimes, hopeless at other times. There seems no consistant approach, I feel there is more could be done to improve services which in the long run would save money and improve wellbeing of all those struggling to support family members.

As with most I need a good night's sleep.

1. I am feeeling ok maybe a 6. 

2.I have been struggling with finding financial help for my adult child and was wondering if any of you have words of wisdom for me.The problem is they are currently not feeling well enough to go to work. They have a casual part time retail job which usually covers rent, food, expenses but currently have taken leave from it due to their current mental health. But they don't have a seperation cert (needed for centrelink) because they still are on the job's eligible employee list. And want to return to it, once stable again.

They haven't done their taxes as this is complicated by them having a small business. They earn a small amount from this - not enough to live off. But they don't feel mentally well enough to navigate the forms for centrelink.

They have a main diagnosis of BPD which our GP says means they are ineligible for NDIS support, as it is not seen as permanent??? But I have heard of other BPD sufferers getting NDIS support to cover therapists or courses? They are on a waiting list for a group therapy course and do see a weekly psychologist.

I do not want them home again as I need my home to be a place to to feel safe in.

I am already covering their weekly psych bills as they have used up all 20 of the medicare funded ones. Anyone with any sage advice of what to do?

They were on a waiting list for a mental hospital place but this was cancelled by the hospital due to the last lockdown and beds being reaassigned for Covid patients.

They had been living off their savings but nearing the last of this.

 

So a bit of a tangent on the struggle front.

 

One thing I did well, was talk calmly to them and not trigger any high emotional response

3. One nice thing I did for me, was I shared a lovely cup of tea and chatted with a friend today

oh @Jaxta . My heart breaks when I hear finance is the main cause of not receiving treatment for BPD. 

If you don't mind me asking, which state do you reside? That may help me point you in the right direction for BPD support.

 

I've been acutely unwell with BPD and have lived in two different states. My BPD support was sensational over the years and it was all through the public system. You need to know where to look. I have had such an amazing treating team that even though my main BPD treatment is complete, I still connect with my clinicians for a chat once in a while (not therapy). I spoke to him only yesterday actually. 


Having received such immense support, my passion now is to work in the space of supporting people with BPD through my own lived experience.
