Re: Topic Tuesday // Let's talk about Schizophrenia // Tues 25th May, 7:00-8:30PM AEST

Hi @Mum1990 and welcome, thank you for joining us tonight.

That sounds like your son is in a really strong point in his recovery, which must be so great to see. I'd love to hear more about the journey you both took together to get to this point. Were there things that helped and supported his recovery?

Q3: How can we move towards seeing people experiencing schizophrenia with a more compassionate, empathetic and respectful approach to a divergent human experience?

I'm so sorry to hear the interactions with psychiatrists @Eden1919. That stigma and judgment by those who are there to support you is not okay- Your experience is true and I hope that you feel that here in this community you are believed, respected and valued Heart

@Daisydreamer  I think maybe by just hearing them and listening to people about their experiences and making a space for them to be heard it could be a good start.

re the psychiatrist experience, yeah i feel ok here on sane it did upset me a lot though when they were saying that to me and made me not want to seek help anymore.

Good Greetings
I am very interested to understand the perspective of ‘Maturity’ in lived experience with schizophrenia in the sense of resilience and compassion

100% @Eden1919 making a space to listen is essential

How do we look past a diagnosis label and see a person? Well, they are there in front of you for a start. And rthey will have hopes and dreams, a soul and a heart. But it may be damaged for the moment. Moving past just talking about stigma and call it out for what it is: discrimination. But remembering to look at each individual as someone who has something of value to offer the world. Just talking about stigma without attaching it to real people can muddy the waters. And people get sick of words that attack without substance behind them. Having a real person’s story reminds people that there are real consequences for their actions. People will respond to authenticity. Divergent thinking shouldn't been seen a threatening if one's human rights are not infringed. And divergent thoughts can extremely creative. Compassion, respect understanding are human traits we all have, and deserve to be given.
