2025 - study group

Re: 2025 - Study Group!

@RiverSeal I wonder what sort of placement and/or practical roles are involved within the Community Services course/s? 🤔

@tyme @rav3n @Jynx @Ru-bee if any of you are familiar with Community Services (Cert IV or Diploma) maybe any of you can answer too? 🙂

Re: 2025 - Study Group!

@Blackcloud i haven't done the cert IV/diploma, sorry! hopefully the others can provide you with some more info 😊

Re: Peer Work Certificate 2025 - Study Group!

@MJG017 I didn’t realise that you were also doing the Cert IV in Mental Health Peer Work! 😄

I’ve been considering about becoming a mental health peer worker (well I guess peer worker first and then take a further role in years time to be an art therapist, if that’s even possible..) too since recently, now that I’ve become more active in the community. But then it seems that I may as well need to take this cert too at some point.

I’m gonna see how that’ll go perhaps next semester or next year, if I’m able to choose some psychology units as my electives in my upcoming bachelor in fine arts (hopefully) degree (if Im able to get into that bachelors next semester) to help broaden my knowledge on the psychology of mental health and behavioural issues, as well as (if I really have to or not) have to do the cert IV in MH Peer Work alongside.

Re: Peer Work Certificate 2025 - Study Group!

@Blackcloud

Yep, I'm coming to the end of the first term.  Currently working on my assignment for "Work effectively in Trauma Informed Care" which is a nice change because so far i've just done ethical and legal considerations and WHS.  Not overly looking forward to role plays, but i'll do what I always do... make it up as I go and hope I've learned some stuff.

I would love to do some extra stuff on attachment as well.  I had me adoptee support group meeting this morning and found out next month's meeting will have an expert on attachment there!  I'm so annoyed about the timing because I'll be away that week, but they said they would keep a copy of all the notes for me.

Like I said, I'm only just started, but i think if you're looking to support people using you're own lived experience then I can definitely recommend it.  There may be some crossovers with your other studies so you may be able to get some RPLs towards the Cert IV.  I think you would enjoy it and get a lot out of it.

Re: Peer Work Certificate 2025 - Study Group!

@MJG017 For the role plays, do you have to do those infront of the class or do you have to record a video of yourself doing that roleplay and then submit it before the due date?

That’s great to know that they’re willing to keep a copy of the notes for you while you’ll be away! I hope it all goes well for you ❤️

Yeah, I think I would too - and I’ll have to ask my uni about the RPL thing and see what they’ll say about that.

Re: Peer Work Certificate 2025 - Study Group!

@Blackcloud

Oh god!  I never even thought of having to do it in a video!  That is the stuff of nightmares!  We have 3 in-person days (my course is mainly online) the last week of term to do the role plays for the term 1 units we did.  So each term will have them as part of the assessment I assume.  I know term 3 has the 80 hours of work placement part as well.  The course I'm doing does organize a simulated workplace for that if you don't want to do it in an actual real place.  I would like to do a real place, but I have no idea where I would do it.  If it's left up to me to organize, then the anxiety will just kick in and i'll end up doing the simulated one.  I'm nothing if not predictable! 😁

Re: 2025 - Study Group!

Hey @Blackcloud In the Diploma of Community Services, there is a placement of 200 hours, but not in the Cert IV of Community Services. Both courses are made up of theory and practical work, such as role plays in assignments. RiverSeal

Re: 2025 - Study Group!

@RiverSeal thanks!

also, what is the difference between Community Services and Mental Health Peer Work - I guess both the content & practical/placement wise?

Re: 2025 - Study Group!

The Cert IV in Mental Health Peer Work is the qualification for working as a Peer Support Worker focusing on both mental health and peer work.

Community Serivces is a board course, which will give you qualifications to work with migrants, disability services, support work and things like neighbourhood houses.

I would recommend speaking with someone from TAFE to discuss career options and exactly what will be covered in each course @Blackcloud

Hope that helps! RiverSeal

Re: 2025 - Study Group!

thanks for that @RiverSeal seems like the MH Peer Work is definitely for me then!
