Welcome to everyone joining us or reading along tonight! Firstly, we would like to acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the various different lands across Australia that we are joining this discussion from tonight. We pay respect to the elders of those communities (past and present) and further extend that respect to any other Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people with us tonight, or reading back through the thread.
Tonight we are joined with Peer Support Worker @FloatingFeather , to talk about being a carer and the different factors that come along with looking after ourselves while caring for others (support, setting boundaries, and self-advocacy), and taking on the role of being a carer out of nowhere (preparing for the role and integrating the new role into our lives).
To get us started, I invite @FloatingFeather to introduce herself to the forums community (you may have already seen her floating around the forums before!) We would also love to hear from members of the community joining us tonight about what has brought you here tonight, and what you’re hoping to get out of the discussion. Everyone is welcome here!

Hi and thank you for joining us. My name is FloatingFeather and I am one of the peer support workers at SANE. I have been an emotional support carer for a close family member who was diagnosed with a serious mental health issue more than 20 years ago. All those years ago there wasn’t a place like SANE or any other type of carer organisations that I could have reached out to for support. Thankfully today carers and their need for support has come much more under the microscope. I really believe in the saying `you can’t drink from an empty cup’. Hopefully through discussions like these carers will start to recognise the importance of taking care of their own cup as well as those they care for.
