Yes accidents can do it to people especially with brain injury if thats the case @TAB. My clients were severely intellectually disabled and families just dumped them in an institution. There was no way of getting them out of there into the community in residential care or some of them into community activities as the institution made them feel "safe". I used to read books on intellectual disability rights and back in the 90's something called "valourisation" was all the go - getting them to do, be and act like normal people in order to be accepted. The thing is society never would have accommodated these people so lots of harm done trying to improve their rights and social standing. Thats what I used to think. All this well-meaning social experimentation in order to do good when in fact it did the opposite. They really should be educating society instead to get the population aware about intellectual disability is and why we should not marginalise and exclude them. Saw this when I was a teachers aide, the disabled kids were never accepted at mainstream schools and the only place for them was in the staffroom at lunchhour because of the bullying - and that is scary if you are young, vulnerable and disabled.

yeah , have a problem with those ads used to be on tv with someone roping down a cliff in wheelchair eg .. no ,its very dangerous, a bad idea etc etc @SmilingGecko mixed classes worse outcome for everyone.
also, I used to catch bus to trade school forever ago and disabled work place was next door. there was bullying etc between different groups . most of them were Downs syndrome, just loud and mad and bragging about having sex at work and one or two quiet ones who looked normal but guess were severely brain injured . All a bit sad. there's a cohort of well, males from my experience born early 1960s mid north of SA if anyone ever researchs it that were affected by fallout from atom bomb tests there. they are still covering up how far the wind took it, would have been in food chain as well

@TAB tbh I dont know what the best outcomes would entail. I did see an intellectually and physically disabled person try and get off the train once and someone tried to help him and said to him "are you ok mate?" People were just staring (!) but it was the first time I ever saw someone being esteemed and treated like everyone else doing a simple task of alighting a train. It really stuck in my brain, no discrimination whatsoever. I wondered if the bloke had someone in his family who was disabled but yeah a nice person for doing it. You don't get to see much of that. Back then people just used to give odd glances, do plenty of staring and nothing else. I don't know if much of it has changed but the general publics attitude used to be really bad.
