I think the book catalogue place was called "The Scholastic Book Club" @hanami
In the 1980's-1990's if you wanted an alternate news content you would have to get something called a "Zine" which was independent press that was roneoed with methylated spirits on a machine or done on a library photo copier.

@SmilingGecko remember the smell of that methylated spirits! Some kids used to love it lol.
Funny enough, my 18 year old daughter is into zines and she tells me they have made a comeback.

I cant remember when first saw photocopier def had at work mid 80s things used to be 'roneo'd.. would type on d St special wel layerd paper put in machine and turn handle to make copies lol how bout golf ball typewriters lol or word processors could edit but had no screen haha lol or listening posts used to plug headphones into box w plastic tubes and hear sounds like not electronic lol @SmilingGecko

Never knew that about Zines being current @hanami I used to get a subscription to some when I was growing up. You know those lollies called PEZ in the dispenser with a cartoon head on top like Mickey Mouse? They used to have a Zine for PEZ fans - all things PEZ!!! My friend used to get a Zine out of Sydney from some hairy legged radical feminists, possibly lesbians called "Skirt"
