The funny thing is @TAB ... I was working for govt at the time ... so I was a little immune to it all ... I lived and worked near ''the street" .. but also separate ... I saw it all but did not need it ... plenty of different cultures and ethnicities there ... yeah ... think I have posted before about Amsterdam ... their police trying to warn people online ... off visiting .. if their intentions are not good ... not all tourism is worth it.

.my take on it @Appleblossom is that Amsterdam is a port. number 1. well I guess it is. so passing traffic of sailors guess.

My take on it is ... that at about early/mid 70s my nanna was expressing herself in Dutch about her horror about what had happened to her beloved Amsterdam, after she had returned from her one trip home. I did not quite understand all the details. I did visit it in 1981 and saw for myself. Also went to Oudekerk for an organ (metal pipe and keyboard) concert. lol

. think the Germans did a pretty good job of bombing it in 1940 @Appleblossom re Amsterdam.
Port cities are different I think , no matter what country they are in. people from Hamburg dont have much in common with Bavarians say, or Berliners speak differently , eat different foods, different culture, society, tolerance, religion even..

Demographics are interesting. When in Albury they were telling me about the very different characters of all the outback towns. Maybe boring highway same same ... but diff places.
Funny thing was; I lived and worked in ports in Melbourne and Sydney as a kid. So by time I got to Amsterdam... I def had already seen a lot. No shocks. My Fancy govt job paid for great year trip.
Not all sailors tho ... gotta be careful about generalisations ... my daddyo was a sailor ...lol
