UNDERSTANDING BIPOLAR

This thread is an open space for anyone in the community who wants to talk about bipolar—whether you joined our Understanding Bipolar webinar or you’re coming to the topic from somewhere else. Scroll to the bottom of this post to watch the recording.

You’re welcome to ask questions, share personal reflections, or talk about experiences that might help others feel understood and less alone. Take part at your own pace and share only what feels comfortable for you.

If you’re not sure where to start, you could respond to one of these:

  • Was there something from the webinar (or your own experience) that stayed with you?
  • Do you have a question about bipolar that you’d like to explore further?
  • What has helped you (or someone you care about) better understand or manage bipolar?
  • Is there something you wish more people understood about living with bipolar?

Re: Mental Health Recovery Webinar // Understanding Bipolar

I am glad Dr Kanna mentioned the importance of circadian rhthyms in Bipolar. First person who has mentioned it to me and I have been looking at this diagnosis since 1980.  An uncle by marriage had been diagnosed with Manic Depression. He also had a Masters in psychology and taught English and had a few good tips for me in discussing the nature of psychosis and encouraged me to look at developmental Psychology, given he knew of my history. Unfortunately he also pushed sex with his student and illicit substances, must have been his mania. Hmmm.  I no longer have contact with them.

Anyway, I was grateful for any intelligent conversations or understandings, in a very mad world.

I also was fond of a father of a boyfriend, who had diagnosed Manic Depression. He was a pianist and cellist. Unfortunately he shot his wife and killed himself. It happened just after my sister. Hmmm. The father was actually kinder than the boyfriend.  I sometimes play his favourite piece in memory of him. The Waldstein.  RIP

I have just known too many wounded humans.

Yes, re Vincent.

Then my son.

Then it was suggested by my current shrink I could have BP Mixed State, but also with the proviso, that there had been enough labels floating around in my family and life. He laughs when I say I thought I was more schizoaffective.

The people in the webinar tended to have much higher access to social and financial capital than I have.  Yes we are all different, but I wish traumaload and socioeconomic differences were not dismissed or overlooked so much in current narratives.

Re: Mental Health Recovery Webinar // Understanding Bipolar

I guess there's some blurring of diagnoses @Appleblossom ... hmm schizoaffective with psychoses,  BPD if rapid cycling, etc etc. Recognising prodromal features is important as mentioned, sometimes behavioural and sometimes through those shifts in circadian rhythms - trying to maintain routines supports wellness but also gives early warning when changes occur.
