Trans Day of Visibility

💕Trans Day of Visibility (TDOV)💕

TDOV was created as a day to acknowledge and celebrate living members of the transgender community. International Transgender Day of Visibility has been held on March 31 ever since.

TDOV was started by activist Rachel Crandall in 2009 as a reaction to the lack of recognition of trans people, noting that the only well-known gender diversity day was the Trans Day of Remembrance, a day of mourning.

While a lot of awareness has been raised in recent years about gender diversity, there is still a long way to go. We have seen that in these past few weeks with ‘anti-trans’ protests taking place right here in Australia.

For a lot of trans feminine people it’s common to feel a pressure to “pass” (ie. be perceived as the gender they identify with) in order to avoid transphobic attacks. Statistically, there are very few safe spaces for trans people.

A recent report by Beyondblue and La Trobe University found 43 percent of trans and gender diverse people don’t feel safe on the street and 32 percent don’t feel safe on public transport.

In addition, transgender people can face up to 50 to 60 instances of micro-aggression (casual discrimination) a day — which takes a huge psychological toll. This ranges from deliberate exclusion to misgendering (using incorrect gender pronouns) and being asked invasive questions that might be seen as harmless.

Raising awareness can help bring about much needed change. One of the biggest ways to support the transgender community is to become a better ally. We can do that by educating ourselves and listening to transgender voices. Here are some helpful links.

Re: Trans Day of Visibility

Thanks for a great post @hanami! Hopefully TDOV helps raise much needed awareness and education. Everybody should have the right to be their authentic selves and feel safe doing so.

Re: Trans Day of Visibility

Thank you for posting this

I know very little about this subject and have been trying to find out more unsuccessfully.

The links are a start

I wonder how many others are curious or looking for information

I watch you can’t ask that.

The episode relating to transgender did’t really help me understand

Did anyone else feel this way?

Is this an open to question thread or just information?
