Peer-operated recovery centres

Hi everyone,

Next Monday I check into a peer-run recovery centre for a week. I am just wondering if anyone out there in forum land ever been to one? I am more than a little nervous about what to expect really. I'd appreciate your opinions both the good/the bad/the ugly.

Re: Peer-operated recovery centres

Hi @Queenie

I have not personally been in such recovery centres, only private psych wards some years back after suffering post natal depression, but wanted to wish you the best possible positive experience and recovery. Wanted you to know that I will be thinking of you and that I look forward to reading about it when you can post again. Hope it's turns out to be all you are looking for xx

Re: Peer-operated recovery centres

Haven't been to one @Queenie. But sending you my best wishes for your stay there.
Being peer run - I'm hoping they have a clear understanding of the struggles you may face and also some helpful techniques to try that have worked for them.
Big hugs. ♥♡

Re: Peer-operated recovery centres

Good Luck with it @Queenie

I have no experience of them. Let us know what you think.

Re: Peer-operated recovery centres

Hi @Queenie

Hope everything is going well for you in the recovery centre. Thinking of you wishing you a speedy recovery 💐

Re: Peer-operated recovery centres

Hey @Former-Member, @utopia and @Appleblossom for replying. My week's stay was actually very beneficial. It was a self cater facility (so you bring along your own food), and was a large house with a couple of others. It was really helpful in that each day you meet with a peer support worker to work on your recovery goals from a standpoint which includes more than just mental health. It was from a holistic point of view, taking in all aspect of life (relationships, social networks, self-esteem, work, nutrition, physical health, mental health etc). It was very refreshing actually and I'd definitely consider staying there again before things bottle up to explosion/implosion stage.

Re: Peer-operated recovery centres

Good to hear it helped. @Queenie

Sounds like the right approach.

I hope there are more PEER SUPPORT services around.

Re: Peer-operated recovery centres

@Queenie - that sounds like the sort of place we all could do with.
I know the things I'm struggling with the most are chores (including cooking), exercise and socialization. Ao I'm glad they help with all aspects of life.
So pleased to hear you got a lot from your stay there and that you enjoyed it.
Definitely sounds like the place to go, before things become too overwhelming.
I know you're not allowed to share the name with us on the forum. But maybe you could talk to @NikNik tomorrow and ask if she can put this facilities name down on the list they keep. May be handy for those who live in your city.
Good to hear from you.

Re: Peer-operated recovery centres

That's a pretty good idea actually @utopia! 😄

I didn't even know there was such a list 🙂

Re: Peer-operated recovery centres

@Queenie I think they are not allowed to recommend places - but for those struggling they might be able to provide a list or tell them where to find a list. Same with how to find a specialist. Is that right @NikNik
