Re: OCD staring / eye contact / peripheral vision

Whats the name of the meducation. I'm struggling with this. And thinking of doing meditation and this pill. I am so tired of fighting this.

Re: OCD staring / eye contact / peripheral vision

Hi Mel

This forum doesn't allow mention of medications . It's a stimulant treatment that in combination with other  SRII medication can help general day to day situations where I have eye peripheral distractions from objects, people in my side vision and other annoying things,in addition to the not looking stuff.

Talk to your doctor about it , it's a treatment for 'Cormorbid ocd and adhd', although it doesn't have as much effect on OCD/ADHD in social situations or formal instances where 'normal' eye contact amd 'normal' behaviour is expected.

Tends to help me get on with things and not dwell so much on the self hatred stuff.

Good luck

Hi Mell

Hope you are doing ok.

The moderators for this forum won't allow me to mention the particular stimulant medication in combination with a common sri treatment that helps me in less formal and general day to day situations.

Please talk to your phsychiatrist. It is used for the treatment of comorbid ocd/adhd , I'm sure they know about it.

Good luck and stay strong. New approaches to treatment are happening all the time.

Re: OCD staring / eye contact / peripheral vision

Hi Kith

As mentioned I'm not allowed to talk about medications on this forum.

I totally understand what you describe, I have identical issues.(like what you mentioned)

It is a very diificult OCD to talk about because of the awkward subject matter. (initial staring at innappropriate / crotch area ) that is a very 'normal' thing for a teenager to worry about. But OCD seems to grab onto the thought and accentuate it in neon lights for everyone to see and dislodging it from our thinking becomes the obsession.

Please know that the stimulant only helps the adhd aspect of the eye issues and helps with concentration. Along with the sri medication ,I found they work well together (for me)

It's important that you speak to your psychiatrist and try cognitive behavioral therapy (helps for some)

While you are still young it's very important to try and get on top of it as soon as possible ,back when I was in high school they knew nothing about it and my family didn't 'want' to know about it .

Don't give up hope ,I understand it's very difficult and extremely frustrating.

Hands up shielding face in class and sitting in the back far corner of the room (peripheral vision) and eye contact ahead at teacher is hard, Avoiding meetings (pick out people in the meeting that may notice you and affect the ocd eye stuff , trying to not look like you are trying to look ) Just wanting to be 'normal' and behave 'normally'.Office environments are very hard work , hopefully you have a seat facing the wall in the corner with shelving blocking the peripheral view of anyone within your vision.

Walking into a room and not knowing where to look. Conversations with more than one person are hard , the person looking on (not talking)  is the object of the ocd behaviiour and peripheral distraction.(same issue at dinner table etc)

Worst of all I find are the reactions I get from others responding to me like I'm the creepiest guy on the planet. (when I'm the polar opposite) It's like the reaction (rejection , judgement as 'creepy') that the OCD wants to give me that causes the symptoms/behaviours.

A Merry Go Round of continuous thoughts. It feels as though we have to find a way to trick the brain into thinking the opposite way.

I can relate to it all ,I'm sure you have similar issues.

Know that there are others out there like you and try to control the self hatred .(not easy)

Please don't hesitate to ask me any questions you might have , new discveries in treatment are always happening . There is an ocd specialist treatment centre based at the Melbourne Clininc .One of the only specialst treatment centers in the country. Might be worth calling them to see what the latest approach is.

Remember you are NOT alone. Good luck mate and take care.

Stay strong and never give up on yourself.

All the best

Re: OCD staring / eye contact / peripheral vision

Hi Sahil

Got your email but can't find the link on this forum.Hope you get this message.

I did try a version of Cognitive therapy ages ago , seemed to aggravate more than anything (for me)

The co morbid OCD ( ADHD ) is still strong but the medication mentioned helps a bit with my day to day mood and 'getting on ' with things.  Helps with minor day to day tasks and concentration issues . (newish medication is a little random as to how much it helps from one day to this next)

Hope life is good. take care.

Re: OCD staring / eye contact / peripheral vision

@Tyler01
Please give me your email id or any other contact options. i have the same problems which exactly you have.i want know about the medicine which you are taking.

Re: OCD staring / eye contact / peripheral vision

On this forum I'm not allowed to mention specific types of tablet ) ,  your doctor would know the medication . (ADHD stimulant and srii together)

Also the medication only helps some areas as mentioned and effectivenees can vary from day to day .

I don't think this forum allows me to send contact details .

Re: OCD staring / eye contact / peripheral vision

Hi All,

Thank you Tyler for sharing your OCD struggles.

It made me want to share my own journey too.

I have the same issue - staring at private parts / and peripheral vision - for quite long.

After 1 year of suffering, I went on medication - psychiatrist diagonsed it as - obsessive fear psychosis - and then gave some medication. It comes under the category of ssri medication  (you can google these - best to visit a psyicatrist for the right one).

The medications worked fine, lessened the problem considerably.

It enabled me to work. I have been taking it for more than a decade now  - no side effects as such I think.

My life - though not completely normal - still was good.

But now I want to improve more - as I realise till I don't fight it - it will continue to curtail my goals; limiting it more and more.

And for the first time - I really want to get rid of the OCD considerably.

So the first thing I recently did - I got the following books on OCD  - you can check them out on Amazon

a) The Anxiety and Phobia Workbook  b) Brain Lock  c) Stop Obsessing d) Freedom from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

All the books are good, though you can ignore - Brain Lock.

Some things I learnt in the books -

1) For the first time - books made me realise - that the more you avoid the stressful situations - the greater your OCD monster will become.  (I think this is what we all have been doing!)

2) It made me aware of the concept of - Exposure and Response Prevention.

3) The books also make a point - that medication in initial stages (at least) - will help, as it will reduce the associated depression. One of the authors refers to use of medication as 'taking sidewings'; when you start to learn swimming, the hand support you tie to yourself. In other words, medication will help, especially in the initial stages.

4) They also talk of imagery exposure - creating a audio tape - wherein you imagine the feared consequences happening if you don't do your compulsion, etc.

5) All the books have a chapter on medication too - listing the different medications available. But again better to take guidance of a psychiatrist on the same.

NONE of the above 4 books - however has a section on 'OCD Staring'.  Except for a 3-page section in the book - Freedom from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. However there also the author doesn't deal with it satisfactorily.  (Basically the author suggestion is to 'sneakily look at privates' - in other words - have 'control' on your thinking / giving it a focus - instead of letting it run amok / uncontrollably)

The books however gives a good view on how to approach OCD. Plus they have sample imagery scripts which will help in dealing with it.

If you don't want to read lengthly books - the following url link - conveys a doctor's opinion (and the process that is suggested in the books also) on how to fight the OCD Staring issue.

http://www.wsps.info/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=63:heres-looking-at-you-kid-people...:

There is this other link also which is good.

http://laocdtreatment.com/answer-to-nina-about-compulsive-staring-at-privates/

I will be now working on the suggestions in the above links with the help of a trained counsellor. Hope to recover.

Thanks again all for coming forth. Let us fight it together.
