food/supplements for bipolar

Hello 🙂 anyone have any recommendations on this front? I have heard (and been trying but it's too early to say (and i'm on a mood stabaliser atm)) omega-3 is supposed to be good, as well as siberian gingseng. here are some links i've found. https://www.abc.net.au/news/health/2018-02-15/what-are-the-health-benefits-of-omega-3/9446528https://www.everydayhealth.com/bipolar-disorder/the-five-worst-foods-for-bipolar-disorder.aspxhttps://www.webmd.com/bipolar-disorder/guide/bipolar-diet-foods-to-avoid#1https://www.healthline.com/health/bipolar-disorder/foods-for-mania-and-depressionhttps://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/323291.phphttp://www.ibpf.org/blog/how-food-changed-bipolar-disorder-me. i know good diet is good for mental health overall but i've had a good diet all my life and have just developed bipolar over the past few years (i'm 23). Cheers, Jenn 🙂

Hi @Jenn4  @jay2

Often the effects are subtle but over time they add up.  Been on fish oil for 10 years and other supplements like iron, Vit B, D more occasionally.  Does not hurt!

Re: food/supplements for bipolar

thanks @Appleblossom , yeah i have noticed, reflecting that gluten can make me sad, and multivitamins can help get me out of the sads. like u said, nothing to lose.

what about coffee? people's experiences? most resources online say it's not good for bipolar but i don't want to give it up haha. and i gave it up for about two weeks and then still went into a manic ep so..

Re: food/supplements for bipolar

and thanks @jay2 , just saw yours. my dad doesn't have bipolar but reckons vit b helps him heaps for stress (like can't function so well without it in stressful times) and obviously stress is often a trigger

Re: food/supplements for bipolar

@jay2 , just took a second B atop my one this morning 🙂

and also on the coffee front what about caffeinated tea?

Re: food/supplements for bipolar

No coffee at nights for 5 years, but my nanna always offered coffee after dinner.Smiley Sad

I am still managing my coffee intake. None for 2 days. Stopping buying instant all the time.

Working on my stinginess & laziness factor and not making up a pot, unless I really need it.

Re: food/supplements for bipolar

I don't drink coffee don't like it,drink tea, 3 cups a day. Vitamin B3 is also helpful for seniors like me with arthritis keeps the pain under control, stopped taking it for a couple of months last year to see what would happen, the aches and pains overwhelmed me. I very smartly got back on it,but its better for your stomach if you take it with food. Stress is a trigger for me, it becomes tension that I find hard to overcome then I fall off the planet, B3 does help to keep my head above the turmoil that would follow.

Re: food/supplements for bipolar

thanks @jay2  and @Appleblossom. love this forum. Appleblossom, i love how u r using your stinginess and laziness for good, that's smart! 🙂 jay2 i'll have to get my Mum onto more B3 she has bad arthritis. it's so interesting what the brain and body respond to! i usually if i'm not moderating it drink one cup of coffee on a normal day then up to 3 as needed not more than that. but sometimes i drink up to ten caffeinated teas in a day if i'm going hard all day or need to get an assignment done for uni in the evening or so.

Re: food/supplements for bipolar

but i've spread my final year over two years to get on top of my bipolar so hopefully won't be needing the caffeine to go hard as much. i study engineering it's a really stressful degree haha, lots of going hard at maths.
