Re: Self care by growing a garden

Was looking at a corner garden and side fence yesrerday and contemplating a load of woodchip to help keep things in check. Mum has a concrete edging machine that I should dust off while on break .

Re: Self care by growing a garden

Did you try doing succulent cuttings @Shaz51, ohhhhh @Former-Member, got our house cleaned and all the stuff they used went on the plants

i am going to move the succulent but i don`t know if they will live now , i brought some potting mix  so i hope they do or mum said i can raid her garden

Re: Self care by growing a garden

If you add some coarse sand or fine gravel to the potting mix, it's better for the succulents. Up to half and half.

Re: Self care by growing a garden

Re: Self care by growing a garden

Hello all. Winter gardening for me is mostly weed control, but I'm still bit by bit digging over my "neglected veggie patch" area in preparation for springtime, and still finding heaps of rocks in the process. One day maybe I'll get time to build picturesque rock walls around all the beds. 😄

And I'm stil dreaming of a big glasshouse/conservatory... I want a place to hide from the cold. 🙂 punchAlmanack1957.jpg

Hello @Nature17

You will find some fellow carers here who find haven in their gardens.

When I say 'gardeners' the methods @Determined employs would be deemed highly questionable in certain organic horticultural circles. LoL

@Smc dreams can become reality...

Went to my garden club dinner recently, found myself feeling quite guarded. Some members feeling that Mr Darcy would benefit from helping out in various ways. They don't realise he really doesn't like gardening, can't tell a plant from a weed. Since his trauma he is not so good physically either. I just could not relax when I really wanted to.

Re: Self care by growing a garden

@Former-Member At some point, if I can work out how to safely dismantle and transport it, I'll be getting a large-ish greenhouse that's in my parents' backyard. It's about 3 x6 m, maybe a little less, metal frame and proper glass, not plastic. The real challenge will be finding somewhere to set it up, because the north side of our house has the driveway alongside it. No point setting it up where it won't get any sunshine. I'll wrangle the dream into reality somehow, someday.

It's hard when an expected relax-time becomes uneasy. I've had times when I've been trying to field well-intended suggestions that weren't going to do any actual good; sometimes directed at me, sometimes at other family members. You really don't want to have to explain so much that your/their private life is put out on show, but when you say "No, sorry, that won't work" without explanation, people often assume you're refusing to "give it a try", and what's the point of them trying to help if you're just going to be stubborn... It's a bit of a "rock and a hard place" situation. I guess "well-intended" at least means that they care, even if their aim is somewhat off target. Smiley Frustrated

Re: Self care by growing a garden

Real glass, sounds like a delicate relocation - reconstruction process @Smc, finding g the right spot sounds like it might be a bit of a challenge.

Think we have all been on the end of well meaning advice and it is probably something on the forum that we are all acutely aware of. I know I find myself wanting to offer comfort and hope to others, often saying a quick prayer as I hit the post button that what I say is helpful not harmful.

I guess it is a bit like a garden @Smc, what plants work for some don't work for others due to inappropriate conditions and / or personal preferences.
